How To Choose Your Blog Niche? Massive guide

One of the biggest questions either in the beginning or later during the journey comes in mind of any blogger or entrepreneur is ‘Am I in a right niche?’

To be honest, I can say not hundred but thousands of things on how to choose your blog niche like other experts out there but I prefer to take a little different approach. I like to put step by step solution and give a right guidance that my audience and community are interested in.

Speaking of that, there are two options to think about in the beginning of your journey: Either you blog about things you like/passionate about or blog what is profitable.

Is it really that simple Chintan?

NO

Because, if you choose what you like/passionate about might not be profitable and if you choose what is profitable might not interest you in the long run.

At the end of the day, you want to turn your blog into a successful business.

Now, I have been writing on numerous things such as revenue management, travel, business growth, growth marketing, productivity, personal development and entrepreneurship.

BUT when it comes to my own blog and business I have always taken a strategic approach and have focused on the three key elements:

  • My passion
  • My knowledge and skills
  • My audience needs

Let’s dive deeper and understand the whole process in a right way. There are three stages in choosing your blog niche and they are:

Stage 1 Figure out the key pillar of your success

Stage 2 Niche demand analysis

Stage 3 Final checks using surveys and opinions

I’ll break down each stage in as much detail as I can so you can get the right flavored juice 🙂

Stage 1: Figure out the key pillar of your success

In theory, we have two options to choose from:

  1. Blog about what you like or are passionate about
  2. Blog what is profitable

Three key elements to focus on:

  1. Your passion
  2. Your knowledge and skills
  3. Your audience needs

And that’s where the vein diagram comes in. The whole idea here is that you want to find the sweet spot in that vein diagram and elaborate it further.

To find the sweet spot, I have two different models for you. Let’s talk more about Model 1, for reference you can see the figure below:

How to leveraging Model 1

In model 1, it is all about your passion, knowledge and your audience needs and requirements. As you can see in this example, choosing a sweet spot among three key elements is your success pillar. It is a win-win situation for both you and your audience.

For example, you are passionate about fitness and have knowledge about Paleo diet. This can help your audience with weight loss that they dream about. The sweet spot is weight loss using paleo diet.

So how to exploit this model?

The first step is to bring out your passion on the table.

The second step is to find out what knowledge and skills you already have with respect to your passion. Remember, you don’t need to be an expert as far as you have a basic knowledge and skills that is fine, rest you can learn along the way.

And the final step is to find out what your audience are looking for, are there any needs in the market?

Pro Tip: You don’t need to reinvent the wheel, instead you should do the things which are already out there in the market BUT focusing on making it BETTER.

How to leverage Model 2

Model 2 is all about three key elements: profitable niche, your knowledge and your audience needs.

Again, it is all about finding that sweet spot which makes everyone happy –  more importantly, you and your audience.

So how to exploit this model?

The first step is to find out what is hot and profitable in the market. Let say, you read some Forbes news or some Startup news and found out that the fitness niche is profitable. Great! and then you decide to pull out the trigger and hit the fitness niche board.

The second step is to see whether you have any basic knowledge and skill to enter into Fitness niche. Then your girlfriend or boyfriend rings the bell and reminds you of that massive transformation you did and everyone was asking you about how you did it.

And you say, you are right my baby!

And the last step is to find out your audience needs and requirements.

Big Question – Difference between Model 1 and Model 2

I’m glad that you have asked 🙂

The big difference between these two models is your INTEREST

Regardless of what model you use and whether you have a knowledge or not, if it doesn’t INTEREST you then again it is a trap.

In order to write and grow your blog and turn it into a successful business you need to be curious, curious to learn new things every day.

And if you lose interest or not interested at all then whether you choose Model 1 focusing on passion or Model 2 focusing on a profitable niche, both are worthless.

For example, I have a good knowledge of travel industry; different destinations, different cultures and festivals. It is also a profitable niche but it doesn’t interest me enough to take it further.

Another case, I’m passionate about food and I have a good knowledge of different cuisines, recipes and food but it really doesn’t interest me enough to do anything in this niche.

I tried cuisines from 24 countries so far and the list is still going (yes, I keep a note 🙂 ) and I cook something new and crazy every day.

I love bodybuilding and I’m fitness geek, I have done a massive body transformation in 2014. I lost 12 Kgs and built muscles with specific transformation techniques and since then I have already helped three people (my friends) to do the same for free but it doesn’t really interest me enough to do anything related to this niche.

I’m passionate about business and entrepreneurship, my knowledge and skills are all about business growth, growing a blog or business, building an audience. My interest is sitting at the skyrocket level.

Now that we know all the steps and models in stage 1 and also cleared the difference between the two models – model 1 and 2, it is time to move on to stage 2.

Stage 2 Niche demand analysis

At this stage, it is all about checking demand of your niche. Let’s start with demand analysis.

The first step is to head to Google keyword tool and analyse the keywords related to your passion, knowledge and audience needs, if you are using model 1. If you are using model 2 then keywords analysis will be related to your profitable niche, knowledge and audience needs.

So how do you pick keywords?

For convenience we will follow the same example of Stage 1, so the keywords we have:

  • Fitness = Passion or Profitable niche
  • Paleo diet = Knowledge
  • Weight loss = Audience needs

In total, we need to analyse three keywords and in this example we are going to analyse these keywords – Fitness, Paleo diet, Weight loss. Please see the screenshot below for how it looks.

As you can see, you need to type in all your keywords and click on Get Ideas. Once you hit get ideas, it will take you to the next page and it looks something like below.

The important metrics you are looking her is Avg.monthly searches and that’s the volume of monthly searches made for that particular keyword.

When you do this process, you should compare the Avg monthly searches with a set reference.

Here’s what I mean: you should set 1000 monthly searches as a set reference meaning if Avg monthly search of any keyword is more than 1000 searches than there is a demand in market.

And you can see in our case, we have definitely more than 1000 monthly searches.

Fitness = 823,000

Paleo diet = 673,000

Weight loss = 246,000

These numbers indicate that there is a demand in this niche and that is a good sign.

This takes us to stage 3 for the final checks using surveys and opinions.

Now that you know what your niche is, we are going to narrow it down even more and find that sweet spot. We also found and analysed demand for your niche so now it is time for the final touch.

So how do you do that final touch?

The answer is through surveys and opinions.

The purpose of this stage is to know the opinion and understand what others have to say about your niche. There are many advantages of this stage such as you finding some interesting findings, thoughts and opinions you might not have heard or thought about.

Now, you don’t need any professional surveys here to accomplish this stage. There is an easiest, fastest and better way to do the final checks, according to me this is the right way to follow during the early stage.

There are two ways to do final checks:

Method 1:

Send an email, message or Whatsapp to at least 5 people you know, they could be your friends, family, relatives, colleagues. The message you can send is;

Hey Chintan, I’m planning to start a blog on helping people lose weight using paleo diet. What do you think? I thought you might be interested in giving me your opinion.

Feel free to copy this message template. (change what is in red according to your niche and requirment)

That’s it. Of course, they might not be your potential customers but what we are doing here is taking the general opinion of people for that particular blog niche and idea.

Once you have replies from those people, just read and say thank you. Don’t cut them or justify anything. The whole idea is just to collect opinions and understand what others have to say about your niche.

Method: 2

If you want to take things to the next level or want to dig it deeper then speak with at least 5 people you know. Again, these could be your friends, family, relatives, colleagues. BUT this time instead of sending a message, speak with them through face to face or though Skype.

These are the questions you would be asking:

Q.1 I’m planning to start a blog on helping people lose weight using paleo diet. What do you think?

Q.2 What is your opinion on weight loss using paleo diet?

Q.3 Do you know anyone or any blog who is blogging about weight loss using paleo diet?

Don’t cut them when speaking also you don’t need to justify your opinion or thoughts. Just listen and get their opinion.
